Kutaisi is Georgia’s second largest city and a significant economic center. It is located in the center of the Imereti region, 220 km from Tbilisi and 140 km from Batumi. The economy of Kutaisi has traditionally been centered on trade, transportation and manufacturing. Kutaisi’s principal industries include food production, wood processing and textiles. A new international airport has recently been built in Kutaisi making it even more easily accessible for local and foreign visitors. The main east/west highway, as well as the railway, both pass through the city. 


Kutaisi is a very old city with a very rich history dating 3,500 years. It was here that Jason and the Argonauts came and took the Golden Fleece. The city has historically been the political, cultural and economic center of western Georgia. There are a number of attractions here including historical sites, museums and several wonders of nature. The landmarks of Kutaisi include Bagrati Cathedral and the Gelati Monastery – both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Other attractions include Motsameta Church, the Sataplia Caves and the Kutaisi Museum of History.


Kutaisi is located on the Rioni River, Georgia’s widest and most water abundant river. The climate is humid and subtropical with winter being mostly warm and dry and summer being hot. The average annual temperature is 14.5 C. The city lies at an elevation of 125-300 meters above sea level. The population of the city is 190,000.
